Fibroma of tendon sheath as a cause of carpal tunnel syndrome.

چکیده
In 1949, Geschickter and Copeland (1) first described fibroma of tendon sheath (FTS) as a distinct entity, but it was not described further until 1979, when Chung and Enzinger (2) presented the clinical and pathological findings of 138 cases selected from the files of the Armed Forces Institute of Pathology. In all cases of FTS reported in literature, only six have been implicated as a cause of carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS). The fibroma described in this report is an example of this rare tumour; it led to the progression of CTS and demonstrated characteristics unique to FTS. Carpal tunnel release and local excision of the tumour promptly relieved the patient’s symptoms.

Fibroma of tendon sheath of the hand: Clinical and pathological study
Fibroma of tendon sheath (FTS) is an unusual soft tissue tumour that tends to occur in the hands. In 1949, Geschickter and Copeland (1) first documented FTS as a distinct entity. In 1979, Chung and Enzinger (2) of the United States Armed Forces Institute of Pathology reported the clinical and pathological findings of 138 cases of FTS. Fewer than 30 cases have since been reported. Because FTS re...
متن کاملThe clinical significance of the palmaris longus tendon and functional superficial flexor of the little finger in the pathophysiology of carpal tunnel syndrome
Abstract Background: The pathophysiology of carpal tunnel syndrome is associated with increased intracarpal canal pressure. Recently, palmaris longus has been introduced as an independent risk factor for the development of carpal tunnel syndrome. The purpose of this study was to assess the association of carpal tunnel syndrome with the presence of palmaris longus tendon and function...
متن کاملThe Role of Presence /Absence of Palmaris Longus and Fifth Flexor Digitorum Superfiscialis Tendons in Carpal Tunnel Syndrome
Background & Aims: Etiologically the causing factor of carpal tunnel syndrome is not clear and multiple contributing factors such as the presence or absence of Palmaris longus tendon have been cited. The aim of the present study was to compare patients with carpal tunnel syndrome and healthy individuals in regard to the absence and presence of Palmaris longus and fifth flexor digitarum superfic...
متن کاملTrigger Wrist
Trigger wrist is a relatively rare disease compared to trigger finger, which is the most common disorder found in hands. Patients with trigger wrist usually complain about the following symptoms: snapping and clicking or triggering around carpal tunnel with or without mild to moderate median neuropathy. There are a total of five cases of trigger wrist: three cases of anomalous muscle belly of f...
متن کاملTrigger finger at wrist caused by degenerative changes of the flexor tendon sheath and carpal tunnel syndrome: a case report
Trigger finger at wrist is a rare condition. Symptoms include finger triggering, snapping or catching at the wrist level. Carpal tunnel syndrome and median nerve compression neuropathy are almost always associated. We reported one case which was caused by degenerative changes of the flexor tendon sheath and carpal tunnel syndrome.
